was born as Whitney Elizabeth Houston on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey. Whitney attended a Roman Catholic school called Mount Saint Dominic Academy. The school was a single sex school. Whitney was raised as a Baptist although she was also exposed to the Pentecostal church. Dionne Warwick is a first cousin to Whitney and her Godmother is Aretha Franklin. Whitney married singer Bobby Brown and after that her appearance in public declined and there were rumors of spousal abuse and drug use. Whitney does make an appearance occasionally and she still works on albums in the studio.

Whitney is an American pop and R&B singer, songwriter, actress, movie producer, and model. She is considered to be one of the best selling artists of all time. Whitney began singing in a junior gospel choir at the age of eleven, in the New Haven Baptist Church in Newark. Shr performed as a soloist in the choir. Her soundtrack for the movie called, The Bodyguard, was considered to be one the best selling albums of all time. Her single from the soundtrack called, I will Always Love You, is the best selling single from a soundtrack and a female, of all time. She is the only female singer to have 2 albums which were in the Top 35 list in the United States, and the only singer to have seven consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number 1 hit singles. Whitney has the Guinness World Book of Records for the Most Awarded Female Artist in history. She is also considered to be one of the top 100 most fascinating female black women of the 20th Century, according to Ebony Magazine.

Whitney signed with Elektra records in 1981 then went on to sign with Arista Records in 1983. She was performing at a night club in New York with her mother when Clive Davis from Arista Records saw her there. Her first recording was a duet with singer, Teddy Pendergrass, and the song was called, Hold Me. The single was released on Teddy’s album called, Love Language. The single hit the Top 5 on the R&B chart and also was later released on Whitney’s debut album. Her self titled debut album was released in 1985. From it came the single called, You Give Good Love, which reached number 3 on the U. S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number 1 on the R&B chart. She performed in night clubs and shows which usually did not allow many black artists to perform there. To date, Whitney has released 13 albums and compilations, 9 home videos, 4 feature films, and has had 22 number one songs from 1985 to 2007.
