is an American band which plays hard rock style music. The band was formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The band became popular almost immediately after their debut album was released. The album was called, Van Halen, and it was released in 1978. The band is still performing today. They have sold over 80 million albums worldwide and they are in the Guiness Book of World Records for having the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Van Halen is number 19 on a list of top selling artists of all time. They have sold over 56 million albums in the U. S. Alone. They are also one of five groups to ever sell 2 albums that sold over 10 million copies each, in the U. S.. Van Halen (with its most well known members, have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March, 12, 2007.

The Van Halen band has had four different lead singers during its career. The band began when the Van Halen brothers, Alex and Eddie began playing music together. Alex played the guitar and Eddie played the drums. In 1972, the brothers formed a band called, Mammoth. Eddie was the lead vocalist and guitar player. Steve Stone played bass guitar and Eddie Van Halen played the drums. The band rented a sound system from David Lee Roth and to save money they let David become the lead singer. In 1974, Stone was replaced with Michael Anthony. In 1974 the band name was changed to Van Halen because Mammoth was already taken. The group played in clubs in Pasadena and Hollywood, and their fans grew tremendously. The group would pass out flyers at local high schools and this is how they gained their popularity. They did all of their own promoting at that time.

In 1977 Warner Bros. Saw Van Halen performing at the Starwood in Hollywood, and in about a week the group had signed a contract with them. In October of that same year they released their first album and it reached number 12 on the Billboard Pop music chart. After that the band continued to be successful and release many albums. They changed their lineup more than once. They went on tours and became very popular. The band took a break from 1999 to 2003. Then in 2004, the band released their second Greatest Hits compilation. The album included three new songs. The group went on tour again and the album went platinum. The tour grossed almost $55 million. The band was again scheduled to go on tour in North America, in September, 2007. The band has released 14 albums and 3 DVDs and music videos to date.
