Tom Tom Club

is a band who performs New Wave style of music and was formed in 1980, by Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (a married couple), and former members of the Talking Heads band. The Tom Tom Club was originally formed as a side project and they had success early on with hits such as, Genius of Love, Wordy Rappinghood, The songs were taken from their first self titled debut album. The album was released on the Sire records label, in the U. S. And in other countries the album was released on the Island Records label. Genius of Love has been re-mixed many times since it was released. Some artists who sang the song was, Mariah Carey, Redman, Funkdoobiest, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The latter did one of the first rap versions of the song.

Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde did the first rap version. The album was re-issued in 1982, by Island, and the songs were full versions plus there was a new single called, Under the Boardwalk, which was the band’s second and last hit single. The next year a follow-up called, Close To the Bone, was released but it was not as popular as the first album. There were two successful singles from the album and they were called, Pleasure of Love, and The Man With the Four Way Hips. The album was never released on a cd. It was released on a cassette and vinyl only. The original vinyl was produced in 6 different colors.

The band appeared in the Talking Heads concert film in 1984 and it was called, Stop Making Sense, and Tom Tom Club performed, Genius of Love. After that the band did not release any more music for four years. The band then released the album called, Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom. The band’s contract with Island had expired so the album was released outside of the U. S. The album was recorded with just a three member group where the other albums in the past had used up to twelve members. The three members on the album were Weymouth, Frantz, and Weymouth’s sister, Laura Weymouth. There were also some guest artists on the album. The album was not very successful. This album was the first album to be released on a cd. The bonus track called, Devil, Does Your Dog Bite?, was on the soundtrack for the movie called, Married to the Mob.

The group continued to record and release music and in 2002, Frantz and Weymouth were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. They released a live concert on a double CD, in 2003, and it was called, Live @ The Clubhouse. The band has been doing live shows ever since, They released a Christmas song called, Mistletunes, in 2007. The band has released a total of 7 albums and 5 singles.
