Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

was born on October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida. He is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player. He is also a music critic today for the modern recording industry. Tom , along with his band, The Heartbreakers, have had many hits during their musical career together. Tom was interested in rock and roll music at the early age of 10, after he met Elvis Presley. The Heartbreakers consisted of Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Randall Marsh, and Ron Blair. Tom occasionally did solo work but most of his success was with the Heartbreakers.

Early in his career, Tom was a member of The Sundowners, The Epics and Mudcrutch, then later with The Heartbreakers. His recording career began with the release of their debut album called, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, in 1976. The album did not get much attention at first. Their single called, Breakdown, was re-released in 1977 and it reached number 44 on the charts in early 1978. The band’s second album was their first album to go gold. The album was called, You’re Gonna’ Get It!, and from it came the singles, I Need To Know, and Listen To Her heart. Their third album, Damn the Torpedoes, went platinum immediately. From it came the singles, Don’t Do Me Like That, and Refugee. In 1980, Tom had to have his tonsils removed and later was back on the road.

Ron Blair quit the band and was replaced by Howie Epstein, before their fifth album, Long After Dark was released in 1982. The band continued to tour and record over the years and also appeared in Live Aid, at the Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium, in 1985. The same year they released the album called, Southern Accents, and from it came the single, Don’t Come Around Here No More, which was a big hit. The next tour produced the live album called, Pack Up the Plantation: Live!. In 1987, they released Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough).

The group split up for a while and reunited in 1991 and toured again for a while then reunited again in 1996 and released the soundtrack for the movie, She’s the One. The movie starred Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Anniston. The band released their last album in 1999 and it was called, Echo. Singles from the album were, Room At the Top, and Free Girl Now, which was released in the U. S.. The album reached number 10 on the U. S. Albums Chart. In 2002, they released, The Last DJ, and it reached number 9 on the U. S. charts.

The band released a total of 17 albums and many singles during their career. They have also received many awards.
