Supertramp

Supertramp

is a British rock band which had top selling albums in the late 1970's and 1980's. Their early music was not as popular as their later hits. Some of these were, Dreamer, Goodbye Stranger, The Logical Song, and Give A Little Bit. They gained super success in the United States, canada, and most of Europe. They did not get the same reaction from the U. K. And this is where most of the band members were from. Breakfast In America was a big hit album for them and it reached number 3 on the charts and had 2 hit singles from it. Stanley August Miesegaes was a millionaire who backed the group. The members of the band were Rick Davies (vocalist and pianist), Roger Hodgson (vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player), Richard Palmer (guitar, balalaika, and vocals), and Robert Milar (percussion, and harmonica). The group was originally called, Daddy, but changed their name to Supertramp in 1970. They signed with UK A&M Records and their first album was Supertramp, and it was released in July 1970 in the U. K. Only and then released in the United States in 1977.Their second album was, Indelibly Stamped. Neither album did well and in early 1972, the band broke up. Their first album was said to be cult style. The second album was more traditional rock.

In late 1972, Davies and Hodgson decided to start the group up again and recruited others to join . Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg, and John Helliwell joined the original members. The difference in the singing of Hodgson and Davies provided an interesting mix to the songs on the albums. Hodgson left the group after for their album, Famous Last Words, in 1982. He stated that the reason for his leaving was because his wife and Daviesí wife did not get along and it caused conflicts among the group. He began a solo career in 1983 and released his first album in 1984 called, In the Eye Of the Storm, from which came the single, Had A Dream.

In 1997, Davies formed a new Supertramp with not only former members Helliwell, Siebenberg, and Hart but several new members as well. Roger Hodgson toured throughout the summer in Europe in 2006 and is still making hits. His DVD, Take the Long Way Home - Live In Montreal, has gone platinum and also has reached number 1 in Canada in the first 7 weeks after it was released. He has donated, Give A Little Bit, to raise funds for the Tsunami Relief effort and also for other worthwhile causes. Rick Davies has since left California and is living in East Hampton, in Rhode island.
