Sisters of Mercy

Sisters of Mercy

are a rock band which was formed during the Emglish post- punk era in 1980 to 1981. The group was formed in Leeds, England in 1980 by Gary Marx and Andrew Eldritch. They wanted to hear themselves on the radio. They had Sisters of mercy t-shirts made and they recorded and released the single, Damage Done/Watch/Home of the Hit-Men. Gary Marx played guitar and Andrew Eldritch played drums on the single. They also wrote the songs. They got the name for the group from a song of the same name which was on the film, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, in 1971. The song was by Leonard Cohen. They achieved underground and goth fame in the UK and had a commercial breakthrough in the mid 1980's. They continued their fame through the early 1990's. They are still alive today but only as a touring group.

Sisters Of Mercy released 3 original studio albums in total. The last one was released in 1990. There were different members of the group in every album. The only ones who appeared in all of them was singer, songwriter, Andrew Eldritch, and Doktor Avalanche (a drum machine). The group stopped recording in 1994 when there was a strike against the recording company, Time Warner. The company was accused of withholding royalties and also believed to be incompetent. Time Warner let the band go in 1997 and the group has not signed with any other record label. They have sang many new songs in their live sets.

In 1981 to 1983, Craig Adams joined the group on bas, Eldridge’s drums were replaced by a drum machine so he could do vocals. Andrew Eldritch wrote lyrics, controlled the drum machine, and did the record producing activities. He also assisted Marx and Adams with the music writing. Ben Gunn joined in as a second guitarist in 1981. Several others had came and went before him. The group split up in 1986 but revived in 1996 for a few gigs supporting the Sex Pistols. They did not get a new contract and did not release any new material. They also joined back up for short tours in 1996. They began another tour in 2006 and appeared in the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Austria, England, Scotland, and Turkey.

The current members of Sisters of Mercy are Andrew Eldritch (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Doktor Avalanch (drum machine), Chris May (guitar, backing vocal), and Ben Christo (guitar and backing vocal). There were other members in 1980 and 1981 who did not stay with the group for long.
