It is believed that some people felt that the downfall of the group was the fact that they were possibly hurt by the rise of grunge music. Their sound did not seem to be very popular or in demand at the time.
Some of those who influenced Dinzineo was Buddy Holly, The Who, The Clash, Elvis Costello, and Nick Lowe. They had an obsession with Mod, which was the Invasion style of Johnís Children On the Move, and other groups of the fifties and sixties music. Back then the music was considered to have substance and style, much unlike that of today. The group was featured in the film, Nuke Emí High, with their song, Much Too Much.
In 1990 the Smithereens reached their peak in performance with their Smithereens 11 which reached number 41 on the Billboard Pop charts. The single which came from the album, A Girl Like You went to number 38 on the charts. The group has collaborated with many musicians in the studio and also live. They collaborated in the studio with Suzanne Vega, and Belinda Carlisle, and live with Graham Parker and The Kinks. The Smithereens still tour and perform live shows which they are noted as doing very well. Occasionally William Rozar will play with the Smithereens. He was with the group before the group became popular. He had left the band because of their use of drugs. He also formed The Witches In Bikinis Band. The group includes live music and dancing and is based on the Halloween theme.
