Simple Minds

is a rock band which was formed in Scotland, and were very popular, worldwide, in the 1980's and early 1990's. They were from the south side of Glasgow and released some critically acclaimed albums in the early 1980's and then produced some politically inspired work. They have a long string of hit singles. Their most successful single hit was, Donít You Forget About Me, and it was number one worldwide. The song was from the soundtrack of the movie, The Breakfast Club. The members of the band are, Jim Kerr (vocalist), Charlie Burchill (guitar), and Mel Gaynor (drum player). They also have Mark Taylor playing the keyboard and Eddie Duffy on the bass guitar.

Charlie Burchill and Jim Kerr began when they formed a band in 1977 and played punk music. After they flopped with one single and going by the name of Johnny & The Self Abusers. After they changed their lineup, they changed their name for the group to, Simple Minds. Although the bandís style of music was considered as rock, it was more like New Wave style and that is the way they performed for their single, Real To Real Cacophony, and also their next two albums. Their first album was called, Life In A Day., and was released on the Arista Records label.

The turning point for Simple Minds was when they released their sixth album called, New Gold Dream, which was released in 1982. The album was listed as part of the New Romantic style of New Wave music. The album had many singles which hit the charts. They were, Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Hunter and the Hunted, and others. There were three different drummers who performed on the album. The band recruited a permanent drummer after that.

The band celebrated their 30th anniversary as Simple Minds, in 2007. They celebrated with a tour of Australia and New Zealand. And were the guests of INXS. Burchill & Kerr performed at the 40th anniversary to Glasgow Celticís Lisbon Lions European Cup winning team. They are set to release another album this year with the W14/Universal record label. This record company bought out the Sanctuary label earlier this year. The new record label had the option to pick up the remaining deal on the Simple Minds Sanctuary deal and they did. John Williams, head of A&R was the one who originally signed the band to Sanctuary Records label. The continues to perform and it is very likely they will continue to record. They have released a total of 30 albums and compilations and 51 singles during their career.
