Sheila E.was born as Sheila Escovedo on September 12, 1957, in Oakland, California. She is an American musician who has worked with Ringo Starr and Prince. She performs a pop, funk, and R&B style of music and Sheila is a singer, actress, and she plays the drums, violin, and the guitar. She began her solo career in 1984 and is still active in her career. She has released recordings under the labels of Warner Bros. Records, and Concord Record label. She had her recording debut with bass player, Alphonso Johnson. The recording was called, Yesterday’s Dream, and it was released in 1976. Sheila also played with George Duke, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross by the time she was in her early twenties. It is said that Prince met Sheila performing at a concert with her father in the 1980's and he was impressed with her talent. The two joined together for the Purple Rain recording sessions. She had her own solo success with , The Glamorous Life, which hit number 7 on the Hot 100 Billboard chart. Her song, The Belle of St. Mark hit number 34 on the charts. In 1985 she had another hit called, A Love Bizarre, which reached number 11 on the charts. She opened for Prince on his Purple Rain tour in 1984 and 1985.
She recorded 3 albums in the 1980's and they were called, The Glamorous Life, Romance 1600, and Sheila E. She played a role in 3 movies. They were, Krush Groove, with Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Blair Underwood, in 1985. Sign ‘O’ the Times, in 1987, and Chasing Papi, in 2003.
Sheila has performed three concerts with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band, in 2001., 2003, and 2006. She performed with Prince again in 2006, at the BRIT Awards She went on a tour of Europe in March, 2007. She has a new band she went with and they are called, C. O. E. D. (Which stands for Chronicles of Every Diva). The group consists of Sheila, Kat Dyson, Rhonda Smith, and Cassandra O’Neal. At several concerts she had a special guest, Candy Dulfer. She performed with Prince at the ALMA (American Latin Music Awards), in June, 2007. She performed at three of Prince’s concerts in July, 2007, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They performed at Macy’s , the Target Center, and an aftershow at First Ave.
Sheila is a business partner with singer and actress, Lynn Mabry. Together they formed a foundation for abused children called the Elevate Hope Foundation. In October of 2007 she was the judge on Fox network’s, The Next Great American Band. Sheila has released a total of 6 albums and 9 singles during her career.
