Rod Stewart

was born Roderick David Stewart, on January 10, 1945 in Highgate, North London, England. His father as well as his sisters and brothers were born in Scotland. His mother was born in England. Rod is a singer and songwriter and sings rock music. He refers to himself as a Scottish Rock Singer. Rod began playing the guitar when he was eleven years old. He has a husky voice which may have attributed to part of his success. Rod has been singing since the 1960's so he has been successful for five decades. His popularity boomed in the 1960's and 1970's.

Rod helped form the band, The Ray Davies Quartet which was later became, The Kinks, which was a successful British Band. Rod was the bandís lead singer. He performed with them at least once but left because the drummerís mother (as well as others) complained about his voice. He also had differences in personality with the others in the band. Rod then joined Jimmy Powell & The Five Dimensions in 1964 as a vocalist and a harmonica player. They recorded a single for Pye Records. Rod moved from one group to another for awhile before he became successful. Stewart decided to sing solo in 1969 and signed a contract with Mercury records. He sang a mixture of folk, rock, and country blues. In 1971 Rod became a household name when his solo album, Every Picture tells a Story, was released and the hit single from it called, Maggie may, received radio play. The album reached number 1 in the United states and also in the U. K..Maggie May was named in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fameís 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll. This was just one of three songs of his to appear on that list. He continued to release hits and in 1975 he moved to the United states. He applied for a U. S. Citizenship because of his love affair with Britt Ekland and also because of a fight with the U. K. Tax authorities.

In his more recent years, Rod has been singing 1930's and 1940's pop style music. He sang songs which were written by the likes of George Gershwin, Cole porter, Irving berlin, and Ira Gershwin. And his success has been equal to that he received in the 1970's. Rod has been successful in releasing six number 1 albums and 62 hit singles in which 24 of them reached the Top 10 charts, and six of those reached number 1. He has sold over 250 million singles and albums. He has been placed on the list of best selling music artists. His best selling hit of all time was, Do You Think Iím Sexy, which damaged his credibility among critics and some longtime fans.
