Rick Astley

was born on February 6, 1966 in Newton-le-willows, St Helens, Lancashire, England. Rick is an English pop/dance singer, songwriter, and musician. He presently lives in Richmond in Surrey with his girlfriend and their daughter.

Rick played the club circuit in 1985 as a singer with a soul band called FBI. Pete Waterman, a record producer discovered him and talked him into going to London to work at the PWL Recording Studio. Rick learned about the recording business but he started out as a studio tea boy. Hi first solo was not well recognized. It was called When You Gonna’ but the credit was given to Rick and Lisa. His first solo, Never Gonna’ Give You Up, was released in 1987 and was an immediate success. The song was at the top of the British charts for five weeks and became the year’s biggest selling single. This was just the beginning for him. He had at least 13 Top 30 hit singles worldwide in his singing career. His album, Whenever You need Somebody, climbed to number one in the U. K.. The hit singles continued for him. On March 12, 1988, Rick’s hit, Never Gonna’ Give You Up, topped the U. S. Singles Chart. It was also followed by another hit single, Together Forever. This was his second single hit in the U. S..

By the early 1990's, Rick left the company of Pete Waterman, his producer. He made another major hit in 1991 with the ballad, Cry For Help. This hit reached the Top 10 in the U. K. And also in the U. S.. His next album was Body & Soul which was released in 1993. The album reached 182 on the Billboard 200 charts in the U. S. Two singles from the album, The Ones You Love and Hopelessly, succeeded on the Adult Contemporary Chart. The first one reached number 19 and second one reached number 4. Hopelessly also peaked at number 31 on the Top 40 Mainstream Chart. Rick did not record or at least there was no releases from him for about ten years. Then in 2002, he released the album, Keep it turned On. One single from the album, Sleeping, became a minor hit.

According to music charts in the U. K., U. S., and Canada, Rick has had 14 single hits and 6 hit albums as of March, 2006. His albums are, Whenever You need Somebody (1987), Hold Me In Your Arms (1988), Free (1991), Body & Soul (1993), Keep It Turned On (2001), and Portrait (2005). It seems that Rick is also getting a lot of exposure on the internet. His song, Never Gonna’ Give you Up, which was posted on YouTube has been viewed over 2 million times as of August 8, 2007.
