R.E.M.

is an American band which plays alternative rock music. They were one of the first groups to play this style of music. The band was formed in 1980, in Athens, Georgia, by Bill Berry (drummer and percussions), Peter Buck (guitar player), Mike Mills (bass guitar player), and Michael Stipe (lead vocalist).

Stipe and Buck met in the record store in Athens, Georgia, that Buck worked in. They shared similar tastes in music. They also met Mills and Berry at a party. Mills and Berry had played music together since they were in high school. The group agreed to write a few songs and try their wings and that is just the beginning of a very successful story. They spent a few months practicing and then played their first performance, in 1980, at a friendís birthday party. They gained instant success in Athens and for the next year and a half, they toured in the southern states.

The group released their first single called, Radio Free Europe, in 1981, on an independent label called, Hib-Tone. The band released the EP called, Chronic Town, in 1982, on the I.R.S. Records label. The band released their debut album in 1983, called, Murmur. The album received a lot of critical acclaim. And helped build the bandís reputation. They toured worldwide and by the 1990's, their success was phenomenal. They released their most successful albums called, Out of Time (sold multimillion copies in 1991), and Automatic For the People, in 1992. They released their album called, Monster, and in 1994 they began a tour to promote their music. The tour was the first one in six years because three of the members had had medical emergencies which prevented them from performing. In 1997 the band re-signed with Warner Bros.. The next year, Bill Berry left the group and this left Buck, Mills, and Stipe as a three piece band. The group kept going through the next ten years and in 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
