Ready for the World

is a music group known for their R&B, funk, and dance music. They are a band from Flint, Michigan who had several big pop, soul, and dance hits. Their band were popular in the mid to late 1980's. Melvin Riley and Gordon Strozier were the founders of the group. They had performed in their high school years in talent shows and were discovered by WJLB Detroit Radio personality, The Incredible DJ MOJO in 1982. The band received notoriety in the area with their first release called, Tonight, in 1983. They gained national notice after they signed under the MCA Record label. Tonight was an underground hit in Flint and Detroit.

The band recorded their first album, Ready For the World in 1984, in Flint, Michigan. Bernard Terry was the producer for the band. The vocal style of Melvin Riley was compared to the music style of Prince. The members of the band are Melvin Riley (vocalist), Gordon Strozier (guitar player), and Gerald Valentine (drums). The hit they are best known for is, Oh Sheila. The song went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also number 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play Charts in 1985. Another song that followed was Digital Display, and it reached number 21 on the charts. In 1987 their song, Love You Down, went to number 10 on the Top 10 chart. In the early 1990's the band separated and the lead singer, Melvin Riley, continued his career and recorded solo albums. One of them was released in 1994 and the other was released in 2000. There was a reunion album for Ready for the World was released in 2004 and it consisted of urban ballads. The band did not have a lot of songs or albums in their short career but they did have some hits that will be remembered for a long time by many. Many musicians do not get this much fame and never get this far.
