Phil Collinswas born as Philip David Charles Collins, on January 30, 1951. He is an English singer, songwriter, drum player, and actor. Phil was well known as the drum player for the musical group called, Genesis. He is also a Grammy and Academy Award winner as a solo artist. He has starred in many movies so he is an accomplished actor as well as musician. Phil has sang 7 lead vocals which were chart toppers and were his solo work and also one chart topper as lead singer for Genesis. This all happened between 1984 and 1989. Some of his hit singles were, In the Air Tonight, Sussudio, and Another Day In Paradise. Phil began as a drummer for the rock group known as, Flaming Youth, and then he played drums for Genesis and sang lead on a few songs. Those songs were, For Absent Friends, in 1971, and More Fool Me, in 1973. He supplied backup vocals at for other songs with Peter Gabriel as lead singer.
When Phil was a small child of five, he was given a toy drum for Christmas. Later in years, his uncle made him a set of drums and he used them on a regular basis. As he grew up his parents bought him a real set of drums since he seemed to be interested in them and his skills improved over the years. He never learned to read or write music notation so he devised a system all his own. He had professional training, when he was 14 years old, at Barbara Speake Stage School. He also began acting and modeling as a child. His first major acting role was as Artful Dodger, in the production of Oliver, in London. He also appeared in the movie, A Hard Day’s Night, as a screaming teenager during a Beatles Concert in the film. Phil’s mother was hired to cast the extras in the film and she arranged it so Phil had a closeup in the film. Phil played percussion on the George Harrison song called, The Art of Dying.
Phil’s first solo album was, Face Value, and Phil attributed his divorce as his influence for the album. His second album was also attributed to his divorce and was called, Hello, I Must Be Going. His album, Face Value, was a big success and went multi-platinum. The album went triple platinum in the United States. The album stayed at number 2 in the U. K. For over a year.
Phil composed the title track for the film called, Against All Odds. The song went to number 1 in the U. S. And number 2 in the U. K. Instantly after it was released. His success continued and his most successful album was, No Jacket Required. He had 4 successful songs from the album. He won several Grammy Awards and has appeared in the game, Grand Theft Auto. His music is used in many movies and cartoons. He has released a total of 8 albums and 9 singles to date.
