Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne

was born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, England. He spent most of his life in Birmingham, England and was a member of a poverty stricken family with six children. He suffered from learning disabilities so he turned to music as a refuge. He became a singer in local band known as Earth. Black Sabbath was the bands first song which was written by Ozzy. The group changed their name to Black Sabbath after they found out that the name, Earth, was already taken. Ozzy is the lead singer of the group and today has his own reality show called, The Osbournes, which shows their everyday lives in action.

Warner Bros. Records recorded and released Black Sabbath and it quickly became a successful hit. The music is built around Tony Iommi’s guitar playing, Geezer Butler’s lyrics, and Ozzy’s eerie voice, the early records are considered as heavy metal. Their singles, War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man still get a lot of airplay. The group has sold over 70 million albums and Ozzy still performs the songs as a solo artist.

In 1979 Ozzy was fired from the group because of drug abuse. He also divorced his first wife, Thelma Riley, and was diagnosed as being bipolar. These problem just added to the mix. He went into a deep depression and he became a recluse and would spend weeks locked in his hotel room. Sharon Arden, daughter of manager Don Arden, went to Ozzy to collect an overdue debt and discovered Ozzy in his room brooding about his problems. She convinced him to start his life over and to get back in the game. In the 1980's and 1990's he worked on getting sober and also on continuing his music without Rhoads. He started recording albums again. He received commercial success in the 1990's.

Ozzy has been married twice and has seven children. He married Sharon Arden and had three children with her and adopted one. He had also had two children with Thelma and adopted her son from a previous marriage. He now also has 2 grandchildren.

Ozzy’s music was not taken well by many parents and Christian groups. He has a foul mouth and has a warped sense of how one should live their life. Many people classified his music as works of Satan and a type of devil worship. He was accused of warping the teenagers minds and this was thought to be a reason for a lot of teenage rebellion. Many parents tried to prevent their kids from listening to the music but it was not an easy task. Many grownups were also guilty of listening to his music.
