Musical Youth

came to being at Duddeston Manor School in Birmingham, England. The group played pop/reggae music and the members consisted of two sets of brothers. There was Kelvin and Michael Grant and Freddie “Junior” and Patrick Waite. Patrick’s and Junior’s father, Frederick Waite had been a member of a Jamaican group called, The Techniques. He sang lead with Junior in the beginning of the group’s career in the late 1970's. The band got gigs in local pubs and also released a single, Political/Generals, on a local label called 021 records. They made an appearance on BBC, disc jockey, John Peel’s evening show and it brought the group some attention and from this they signed up with MCA Records. Frederick Waite was replaced by Dennis Seaton as the lead singer. In the winter of 1982 they released, Pass the Dutchie, which became one of the fastest selling singles of the year. The single went to number one on the U. K. Singles chart. The single sold over 4 million copies and was nominated for a Grammy Award. The single placed in the Top 10 in the United States and the video was one of the first black artists to be played on MTV.

Their next follow up single was, Youth Of Today, which reached the Top 20 in the U. K. early in 1983. Never Gonna’ Give Up went to number 6 on the charts and they received minor success when their, Heartbreaker and Tell Me Why, hit the Top 20 on the U.K. charts. They collaborated with Donna Summer on the Top 20 hit, Unconditional Love. Their version of Desmond Dekker’s, 007 got them back in the Top 30 chart and after the hit, Sixteen , the group split up when Dennis Seaton left the group.

The group reformed in 2001 and were to appear on tour with others on the English, Here and Now tour but it was cancelled because of the 9/11 attacks. In 2003 they were back again and appeared in a 1980's Nostalgia tour. In 2005 only Michael Grant and Dennis Seaton were left in the group and they performed at Weisen festival in Austria.

Albums released by the band were The Youth of Today (1982), Different Style (1983), Anthology (1994), The Best of Musical Youth..Maximum Volume (1995), and The Best of Musical Youth twentieth Century Masters- The Millenium Collection (2004).

Michael Grant was born on July 6, 1969 in Birmingham, England, Kelvin Grant was born on July 9, 1071, in Birmingham, England, Dennis Seaton was born on March 2, 1967, Patrick Waite was born on June 16, 1968 and died on February 18, 1993. Do not have birthdate for Freddie Waite.
