Michael Pennwas born on August 1, 1958 in Greenwich Village, New York City, New York. He is an American singer and songwriter who comes from a very famous family. His mother is Eileen Ryan, an actress, and her father is Leo Penn, who is an actor and director. He has two brothers who are also actors and they are Sean and Chris.
Michael was a member of the band, Doll Congress before he made his 1989 debut album release called March. He had also appeared on a few television series as an extra. One of them was St. Elsewhere. The first single , No Myth, from his album, March, gained Michael some attention. He also got a 1990 MTV Video Mucic Award for best New Artist. He had three albums that followed and they were, Free-For- All in 1992, resigned in 1997, and MP4: Days Since A Lost Time Accident in 2000. He did not get the attention for these like he did for March but the critics still praised his music. Michael collaborated with The Brothers Quay on Long Way Down Look What the Cat Drug In. It was a hit in film festivals around the country and it won awards also. Michael met singer song writer, Aimee Mann, in the late 1980's as she was recording her album, Iím With Stupid. Michael contributed to this album. The couple developed a friendship which led to romance, then marriage in 1997. They formed United Musicians, along with Michael Hausman. Michael and Aimee live in Los Angeles but have no children. Michael does have a son from a previous marriage.
Michael decided to try his hand at film scoring after he was pressured, by director Paul Thomas Anderson, to do so. Michael also scored Andersonís Boogie Nights after he had scored Hard Night. Michael appeared briefly in the film as a recording engineer. While the film was being edited, Anderson directed a music video with Michael for the song, Try, from the album, resigned. Other films that Michael has scored were The Anniversary Party, Suffering Manís Charity, Melvin Goes to Dinner, The Comedians of Comedy, and The Last Kiss.
In August, 2005, Michael released his album, Mr Hollywood Jr., 1947. He recorded it on his own Mimeograph records label. The songs are set against the background of post world war II Los Angeles. The album was re-released by Legacy Recordings in April 2007 with bonus tracks from a KCRW session. Legacy also released Michaelís collection, Palms and Runes, Tarot and tea.
