Living Colour

is an American band which was formed in 1983, in New York City, by Vernon Reid (guitar player). Vernon was well known in the jazz scenes of downtown New York City. He formed many bands under the name of Living Colour between 1983 and 1986. The early band members were Alex Mosley (bass player), Jerome Harris, and Carl James (also bass players). Greg Carter, Pheeroan Aklaff and J. T. Lewis were drummers. Geri Allen was the keyboard player and D. K. Dyson and Mark Ledford were the vocalists. Reid occasionally sang lead vocals. Living Colour was said to be ranked as number 70 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Living Colour released their debut album in 1986 and called it Vivid. The lineup at the time was Muzz Skillings (bass player), Will Calhoun (drummer), and Corey Glover (vocalist). Vivid reached number 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. MTV played the video for the record, Cult of Personality, and this helped gain them more popularity. They also gained popularity by doing the opening act for Guns N’ Roses in the 1989 Rolling Stones tour of Stadiums in the United States. Time’s Up was the second effort at stardom and the album reached number 13 on the Billboard charts., and also won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Album. In 1991, they joined the Lollapalooza tour released an EP called Biscuits.

In 1993 they released the album called, Stain. This album reached number 26 on the charts. The band split up in 1995 after they failed to settle their musical goal for their fourth album they were working on. The compilation called, Pride, included 4 tracks from the album they were working on at the time of their split. Solo efforts were done by some of the members after the split up.

The band reformed in 2000 and they released another record they called, Collideoscope, in 2003. Their live cd titled, Everything Is Possible: The Very Best of Living Colour with songs from Collideoscope, was released by Sony Records from CbGB’s. Living Colour was formed out of the Bvlack Rock Coalition. The Black Rock Coalition was a non- profit organization. Vernon Reid was also well known in the downtown New York jazz scenes because of his tenure in Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society. Living Colour performed in a week long European tour which started on December 12, 2006. In May, 2007, Living Colour, released their first live DVD called, On Stage At World Café Live. The band released a total of 7 albums, 2 music videos, 6 compilations, 17 singles, and 3 awards. They have a large fan base and are not through with their careers yet.
