Lita Fordwas born as Carmelita Rosanna Ford, on September 23, 1958 in London, England.She moved to the United States with her family when she was young. She started playing the guitar at the age of 11. When she was 17, she became a member of the the punk metal band, The Runaways. This band was a popular all teenage bnd. The band split up in 1979 and Lita began her solo career. She endorsed the B. C. Rich guitars, especially the Mockingbird and the Bich double neck models. Her first two albums were very successful and won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance for, Gotta’ Let Go. The first two albums were, Out For Blood, and Dancin’ On the Edge and were released in 1985. After 4 years absence, she began a followup to Dancin’ On the Edge, and it was called, The Bride Wore Black. The album was never released.
Lita Ford changed from the Mercury Records label to the RCA Records label. She changed her style to the lighter pop metal and this was the breakthrough to her real success with the album released in 1988, and self named, Lita. Sharon Osbourne was her manager and Mike Chapman was her producer. From the album came her first commercial hit which reached number 12 on the chart and was called, Kiss Me Deadly. Her followup ballad was a duet with Ozzy Osbourne (Sharon’s husband), and was called Close My Eyes Forever, and it was the first Top Ten single for both singers.
Lita married Chris Holmes (member of the group, W. A. S. P.) In 1990 and the marriage lasted until 1991. She was also romantically involved with others later. They were Nikki Sixx, Joe Lynn Turner, Toni Tommi, Jay Schellen, and Jimmy Tavis. All of her involvements were musicians from one group or another. Today she is married to Jim Gillette, a member of the band Nitro. She has 2 sons with him.
In 2007, Lita was asked to be in the cast of The Surreal Life on VH1, but she declined the offer. In the Xbox 360 version of the game, Guitar Hero II, it is called, Joan & Lita Award, as a tribute to Lita Ford and Joan Jett. The award is awarded to two players who gets a 100 note streak in the cooperative mode. Lita has released a total of 10 albums and 13 singles during her musical career. She has a lot of fans and will be remembered for a long time by many. Who knows, maybe one day she will make a comeback and record again or at least have a performance or two.
