Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jamwere one of the original Latin freestyle American groups of the 1980's. Lisa Lisa was born Lisa Velez in Puerto Rica on January 15, 1967. Cult Jam was made up of Alex Moseley (guitar/bassist), and Mike Hughes (drums and keyboard). Full Force assembled and produced the group. The group released their debut album, Lisa Lisa & Cult jam, with Full force in 1985. Their single, I Wonder If I Take You Home, was leased by the Personal Records to the European division of CBS Records for a compilation album called, Breakdancing.The CBS, Columbia Records division of the United Stated released the record. Stateside Club began playing the single from the import LP. The record quickly topped the Billboard’s Hot Dance/Disco chart. It also crossed over to the R&B Chart and peaked at number 34 in 1985. The single eventually went gold. The single was followed by the hit Can You Feel the Beat. It went to number 40 on the R&B Chart in 1985. Their third single, All Cried Out, went gold and to number 3 on the R&B Chart and number 8 on the Pop Charts in the summer of 1986. It was also later covered by Allure in 1997 and in 1998 it was a hit. The album Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force went platinum.
The group’s second album, Spanish Fly, was a big success in 1987. Two songs from it made number 1 pop hits, and they both went gold. The singles were Head To Toe and Lost In Emotion. Head To Toe also went to number 1 on the R&B Chart for two weeks. Spanish Fly went platinum and reached number 7 on the Albums chart. Other singles from the album were Someone To Love Me For me, Spanish Fly, (went to number 7 on the R&B Chart), and Everything Will B-Fine (number 9 on the R&B Chart). In 1989, the album, Straight To the Sky, was a moderate hit and it included the Top 20 pop number R&B single, Little Jackie Wants To Be A Star, and also the hits, Just Git It Together, and Go For Yours. Go For Yours was featured in the movie, Caddyshack II and is on the soundtrack too.
Their fourth album was their last one released and it was called, Straight Outta’ hell’s Kitchen. It was not very successful but it dis have a single from it called Let the beat hit ‘Em, and it reached the Top 40 and was number 1 on both the R&B and Club Charts.
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam split up in 1991. Velez went on to pursue an acting career as going solo with her music. Moseley and Hughes went on to pursue other projects. Lisa Lisa released a solo album in 1994 and a second album in 2007.
