Lipps Incwas a studio band that did not last long but they achieved one hit song. Funkytown, released in 1980 is considered by some at the last disco to hit number 1 in the United States. After that they music style changed again. It was the mark of the end of the Disco era. The group was formed in the 1980's in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Steve Greenberg was the one who formed it and he also played several music instruments. The lead singer was Cynthia Johnson. The rest of the group was a changing group of session musicians. Their hit, Funkytown, stayed at number 1 for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot Dance Music. Club Play Charts in the United states. It was also awarded a Platinum Record. Funkytown also reached number 2 in the United Kingdom and was a hit around the world. Rock It, was their only other hit and it reached number 64 on the Hot 100 Chart. The group did have other dance hits in the 1980's. One of them was, How Long, in 1981, which went to number 4 on the U. S. Dance chart. The group stopped recording in 1983. The song, Funkytown, has become popular again recently because of the mash up of it with Soulwax’s dance track, NY Excuse which is appearing on the Soulwax remix album, Nite Versions. The new track is called NY Lipps.
The song, Funkytown has been used in several tv shows and an Australian group has a cover version of the song in 1987. The song was mentioned in an episode of The Simpsons. In the tv show, Malcolm In the Middle, Hal roller skated to the song, Funkytown , in the episode, Rollerskates. In one episode of South Park, the Towel Towelie played Funkeytown using the telephone number pad by keying the 557 554-5085. Pseudo Echo, the Australian group, had a very successful cover version of the Funkytown song in 1987 It reached number 6 in the United States and number 8 in the U. K. And topped the charts in Australia for 13 weeks beginning in December, 1986. It also reached high ratings in some other countries around the world. A Mexican Rap/Rock group called Molotov, have a cover version of the song, Designer Music, on their album Con Todo Respeto.
The Lips Inc did not last very long and were not among the most popular of the rock and roll or disco era but they did leave their mark with their song, Funkytown. Many people can relate to the song in one way or another and the song will be remembered for a long time to come, and the group will be remembered as well.
