The Knackis a Los Angeles based band that plays rock music. The group had their first hit single, My Sharona, in 1979 and it became an international hit. The band was compared to the Beatles because of their retro, new wave look. The hard rock and power pop by the Knacks brought about much criticism because many people did not like that style of music. Many people were also critical of the punk rock, and disco music that was prevalent at that time. They were also criticized because of their lyrics to their songs. After some album releases and problems within the group and criticism outside the group, they broke up. They have re-united periodically over the years and in 2001, they released a studio album called Normal As the next Guy. They also released a DVD Live From the Rock Ní Roll Funhouse. The group still seems to be active in the music business and as of 2005 they were still playing in different performances.
The Knack consists of a group that is all Jewish. Their singer, Doug Fieger, is a native of Detroit, Michigan and previously had played in a country band called Sky and he also played with the Sunset Bombers. Other original members were Berton Averre who played guitar, Prescott Niles played bass guitar, and Bruce Gary played drums. Averre and Niles still play for The Knack. Bruce Gary died in 2006 from lymphoma. He was 55 years old. Bruce had already left the band some time before his death and had become a produce and also performing live with performers Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Spencer Davis, Stephen Stills, Rod Stewart, and Sheryl Crow. Bruce did not join the group in their reunion performances. The four original members did get together in a studio and recorded a track for a multi-artist compilation album which was to salute the British band Badfinger. The Knack appeared on the television show, Hit me baby One More Time. The group continues to write and record new songs,. They also play in concerts a couple of times each month.
It seems that The Knack are in a law suit against the group Run DMC. The Knack filed the lawsuit against the other group because it appears that Run DMC used the guitar riff that was used in the Knackís song, My Sharona, was used without permission in Run DMCís track, Itís Tricky. They were charged with copyright infringement. Time will tell how that will turn out but it seems that there might be a lot of money involved here.
The Knack had many albums both studio and live and they also has singles which went Gold. More information on The Knack is available on the internet.
