John Cougar Mellencamp
John Cougar Mellencampknown as John Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp, was born on October 7, 1951, in Seymour, Indiana. John is an American rock singer and songwriter. He joined the soul group, Crepe Soul and was one of their lead singers of the group. John worked for a phone company after graduating from college. When he was 24, he decided to go to New York to pursue his music career. He signed on with agent, Tony DeFries of MainMan Management. Tony DeFries suggested that John release his first, Chestnut Street Incident, under the stage name of Johnny Cougar. The album was a flop and John lost his contract with MCA Records. In 1978 he signed with Riva Records label and released, A Biography, in Australia but not in the USA. A big hit single from it was, I Need A Lover. This track was added to his next album called, John Cougar (1979), and it became a hit single at number 28, in 1979. John released, Nothiní Matters and What If It Did, in 1980. From this album came the top 40 singles, This Time, hit number 27 on the charts, and Ainít Even Done It With the Night , made it to number 17. John released his breakthrough album in 1982 called, American Fool. Hit singles from this album were, Jack and Diane (number 1 for four weeks), Hurts So Good (spent 4 weeks at number 2), Hand To Hold On To (made it to number 19), Hurts ( was in the Top Ten of the charts in 1980, longer (16 weeks) then any other single in the 1980's, and Diane, was the only single to top the Billboard Pop Chart.
John changed his stage name to John Cougar Mellencamp in 1983 and released the album, Uh-Huh, which had 3 hit singles come from it. The singles were, Pink Houses, Crumbliní Down, (these 2 made the Top Ten chart), and Authority Song. In 1991 he released the album, Whenever We Wanted, under the name John Mellencamp. From this album came 4 Top 40 hit singles called, Get A Leg Up, Again Tonight, No More Than Ever, and Love and Happiness.
John continued to go on tours and record and has released a total of 19 albums and compilations as well as many singles. He did a benefit album called, God Bless America. John has also had a short career and appeared in 4 films called, Falling From Grace, Madison, After Image, and Lone Star State of Mind. John now lives in Bloomington, Indiana, and has been married to supermodel Elaine Irwin since 1992. John has 5 children from 3 marriages.
