Jody Watley

was born on January 30, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. She is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and label owner. She has sold over 20 million albums and singles worldwide. She also ranks as one of MTV Video Music Awards, right along with Madonna and Janet Jackson, most nominated female artists ever. She has had ten nominations and she won a Grammy Award in 1988 for the Best New Artist. She ranks as number 144 of the most successful R&B artists of all time according to the Billboard magazine.

Jody got her start as a dancer on the television show, Soul Train, at the young age of 14. She was a singer in the R&B band, Shalamar, from 1977 to 1984. Others in the group were Howard Hewett and Jeffery Daniel. The group released the platinum selling album, Friends, and the number 1 R&B singles, A Night To Remember, This Is For the Lover In You, and The Second Time Around, in the United States. They also had many Top 10 hits on the U. K. Charts. After several problems within the group, Jody left. She took part in Bob Geldofís, Band Aid, with stars such as Sting, Bono, and George Michael. Their single, Do You Know Itís Christmas, raised millions of dollars for the famine relief in Ethiopia.

Jody released her first single , Hasta La Vista Baby, from the album, Looking For A New Love. The song became a big hit, in late 1986. In 1987, she released her debut album Jody Watley, on MCA Records. Looking For A New Love stayed at number 2 on the Billboards Hot 100 singles Chart for 4 weeks. It sold over 750,000 copies in the United States. The album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200 Chart and from it came four more single hits, Donít You Want me, Still A Thrill, Some Kind Of Lover, and Most of All. It sold over 2 million copies in the United States and almost 5 million worldwide.

In 1988, Jody was named Best New Artist at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards and also nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. She was also nominated for 4 MTV Video Music Awards and 3 Soul Train Awards which included Album of the Year and Single of the Year in 1988.

Jody continues to release top music performances and has made her mark in the music industry. Her first single video was a remake of Madonnaís ,Borderline, and it reached number 2 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart on January 13, 2007. Her second single, I Want Your Love, reached number 1 on the Hot dance Music/Club Play in June , 2007.
