Jefferson Starship

Jefferson Starship

is an American rock band in the 1970's and 1980's. They were formed in San Francisco and was from the psychedelic rock group, Jefferson Airplane. The transition took place in the 1970's. The group was made up of, Paul Kantner (singer, guitarist), David Crosby, Graham nash, Jerry Garcia (from Grateful dead), Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Grace Slick, Joey Covington, and Jack Casady. The band had album releases as well as singles throughout the seventies. There were problems with alcohol from some members. Grace Slick had an alcohol problem and it led to 2 nights of disastrous concerts they had in Germany in 1978. She failed to appear on the first night and the second night she was drunk. She mouthed to the audience that their country had lost during World war II. After that, she left the band. Near the end of 1978 the group recorded Light The Sky On Fire for their album, Gold, and performed it under the title, Cigar Shaped Object, on camera for The Star Wars Holiday Special. Other members left the group shortly before the release of Gold. Grace Slick returned to the group after the 1979 release of Freedom At Point Zero. The groupís next album Modern Times included grace. The group had a high visibility on MTV and Solid Gold. In 1984, the last original member, Kantner, left the group. He also filed a lawsuit against the other members of the band for the Jefferson name. He won the lawsuit. The band continued to record and release songs. In 1987 the song, Nothingís Gonnaí Stop Us Now hit number 1 and was featured in the film, Mannequin.

Grace left Starship again in 1988. She had become self conscious of her age (she was in her late 40's) and she also did not did not like the bandís new pop image. She does not believe that old people do not belong on the pop stage. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and some do not agree with this. There are many 60's and 70's musical groups still performing and going strong.

There are 2 versions of Jefferson Starship today. One is the revived group which is also known as the revived group called, Jefferson Starship: The next generation or Jefferson Starship TNG. This group is a revived group of the original band which includes Kantner, Balin, and Diana Mangano ( replaced grace Slick). The group plays concerts and grace Slick joined them and did guest vocals on their 1999 album, Windows of Heaven. In 2005, bass guitar player, David Freiberg rejoined the band for their Jefferson Family Galactic Reunion Tour and he continues to tour with the group.
