was born on May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana. Her father and mother are Joseph and Katherine Jackson.. She is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress, and activist. Janet is ranked the 9th successful act in rock and roll history. And the 2nd most successful female recording artist of all time in the United States, according to the Billboard rankings. She is the youngest of nine children. The family were a lower middle class family and their religion was Jehovahís Witnesses. Her older brothers started performing when she was just a small fry. In 1969, The Jackson 5 (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael) signed with Motown records after previously performing in nightclubs and on stage.

Janet did not want to be a performer but her father insisted so she participated in some family musical projects. Her first recording was a duet with her brother Randy. Their song was Love Song for Kids and it was released in 1978. When she was fifteen, her father arranged her recording career by arranging a contract with A&M Records. Her debut album was released in 1982. The album reached the top ten on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and was on the chartís top 50 for 45 weeks. Her second album, Dream Street, was released in 1984. It reached number 19 on the R&B Albums chart. The album sold about one million copies worldwide.

Her album, Control, was released in February, 1986. This was her breakthrough album. It produced five singles from it, Control, What Have You Done For Me, When I Think Of You, Letís Wait Awhile, and Nasty. Control was her first number one on the Billboardís Hot 100. In 1987 Janet was Awarded a Grammy nomination for the Album of the Year, six Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, and three Soul Train Music Awards, which included Album of the Year. That same year, Janet fired her father as manager.

In 2006 Janet celebrated her 40th birthday in Los Angeles with a party at Shereen Arazms Shag. She was on the cover of US Weekly in June, 2006. Janet is said to be going to star in the movie, Why Did I Get Married, which was released October, 2007. Her new album is to be released in 2008. Janet has become one of the most popular singers of all time. She especially got attention when she and Justin Timberlake performed during halftime at a football game a few years ago and he ripped her shirt from her breast bearing it for all to see on national television. While they say it was an accident, many believe to the contrary. The timing and the song they sang seemed all to coincidental.
