Icehouse

is a band from Australia and was originally known as Flowers. They were best known in the 1970's in the Sydney, Australia pubs and also into the early 1980's. They had a more mainstream success in the 1980's with radio airplay in the United States and in Europe. The bnd was one of the first groups to introduce the synthesizers and the Fairlight CMI in the music industry. The group was formed in 1977, by Iva Davies (born as Ivor Arthur Davies) and Keith Welsh (bass player). For a while they hired the services of Bob Kretschmer until he was replaced by Paul Gildea (guitarist). The band has released 7 albums since 1980, as well as several compilations and collaborations with other artists. The group played rock, New Wave, Post Punk, and Synthpop styles of music. While still known as Flowers, they built up a strong fan base from performing acts in and around Sydney, Australia. In 1980 they signed with Regular Festival Records label and released their debut single, Canít Help Myself. The song reached the Australian Top 10 in June , 1980. Shortly after the single, they released their first album called, Icehouse. The album also made it to the Top 10 and turned out to be one of the top selling albums in Australia. Two other singles, We Can Get Together, and Walls, both reached the Top 20 in Australia. Their single from the album, Icehouse, created interest in the U. K.. This was due in part to the music video which went with it. In 1981 the group decided to change their name to avoid confusion with The Flowers band in Scotland. While they were still known as Icehouse, they toured the U. K., Canada, and the United States. Their song, We Can Get Together, reached number 62 in the U. S.. The single hit, Love In Motion, hit the Australian Top 10 in November, 1981 under their new name, Icehouse.

The band split up in January, 1982 and Davies had to record the second album, Primitive Man, on his own, with the help of Keith Forsey. Primitive Man was a huge success and turned out to be the big International breakthrough for Icehouse. The single, Hey Little Girl, hit the Top 20 in the U. K. And remains to be their most played song of all. Another single from the album was called, Great Southern Land, and it made the Australian Top 5 was also used in the movie, Young Einstein.

In 2006 Icehouse was featured on the Triple M Essential 2006 Countdown with 14 of their songs. The band has released a total of 20 albums and compilations during their musical career and well as many singles.
