Hall & Oates
Hall & Oates, a music rock duo, consists of Daryl Hall and John Oates. They were the most popular in the 1970's and 1980's. They met in Philadelphia and after 20 years of making music together, they became one the most successful duos of all time. Some even went as far as considering them the best duo of all time. They combined rock and roll with rhythm and blues which they called rock and soul. They are well known because of their 6 number 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Those six hits were, Rich Girl, Kiss On My List, Private Eyes, I Can’s Go For That (No Can Do), Maneater, and Out of Touch. They also had many other songs which hit the Top 40 charts.
Although the duo never did formally break up, they released their last Top 40 song in 1990 and then disappeared from public. This was short lived however because they continued to tour and record with some minor success. They had seven RIAA platinum albums and six RIAA gold albums. The duo released a greatest hits compilation in 2001 from Bertelsmann Music Group and the BMG Collection was expanded in 2004 then reissued the next year. Daryl and John were voted into the Songwriter’s Hall of fame in 2003.
Hall & Oates left Atlantic Records after the release of their album, War Babies., and signed up with RCA Records.. Their first album release on the new label was Daryl Hall & John Oates. The single from the album called, Sara Smile, was the first Top 10 hit and went to number 4 on the chart. Another hit was the single, She’s Gone, which reached number 7 in 1976. The album, Bigger Than Both of Us was released later that year and the single from it called Rich Girl, was the duo’s first number one hit. After these few hits the duo toured and recorded more albums but could not quite reach their previous success. Hall & Oates signed up with Arista Records in 1981. Their first album with this label was, Ooh Yeah! And from it came the hits, Everything Your Heart Desires, Missed Opportunity, and Downtown Life. This album gained platinum success. After that they did one more album, with the Arista label called, Change of Season. From this album came two more hits called, Don’t Hold Back Your Love, and So Close.
Forty years after the duo first met they continue to record and perform together. The other members of their band were Charles DeChant, Tom Wolk, Zev Katz, Mike Braun, Eliot Lewis, and 15 previous members at different times. The duo definitely made their mark in the music industry.
