Eurythmics

Eurythmics

Eurythmics

is a British duo who was formed in 1980 by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. The duo has had success in that they have sold over 75,000 records worldwide. The have also won many awards for their music. They have had several world tours and are well noted for their pop songs and their music videos and performances. The two had previously worked together when they were members of group called The Tourists. They also had a romantic relationship together.

While the band received modest commercial success, it was not a happy time for them. There was a lot of stress with work- personal relationships and also they were not satisfied with the management, publishers, and record labels, and the band lineup. They wanted to do pop music and have a more experimental way of doing their music so they could record their own personal feelings and ideas. They wanted to experiment more with electronics. The pair decided to stop their personal affair so they could concentrate more on their musical career.

The group released their first album called, In the Garden, in 1981. A few of the songs on the album were co-written by Roger Pomphrey ( guitarist). The album had very low sales. Two single songs from the album also bombed out. Stewart and Lennox went to Chalk Farm in London and borrowed the money to open an eight track studio above a picture framing company. This gave them the freedom to record without paying the expensive recording fees. They recorded many tracks and performed live using different lineup music equipment. These were trying times for the duo. Their three singles that RCA had released were not successful and Lennox had at least one nervous breakdown and Stewart was hospitalized with a collapsed lung.

The duo’s big break came with the release of their album, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This, in 1983. The single, of the same name, was also successful. Their lives turned for the better and they succeeded with their album was a huge hit in Britain and also reached the charts in America.

There sales continued to be very strong in the U. K. but slacked off somewhat in the U. S. with the release of the album, Revenge, in 1986. The song, Missionary Man reached number 14 on the Hot 100 Chart in the U. S. The duo went on a worldwide tour to promote the album. From the tour came a live concert video. After that Stewart began producing for Tom Petty and Bob Dylan and Lennox did some acting. They reunited in 1987 to release the album, Savage. The duo then went their separate ways from 1991 to 1998. Lennox took time off to have a baby and think out a new direction for Eurythmics. In 1992 Lennox released a solo album called Diva. Stewart began writing film soundtracks and also formed a band called The Spiritual Cowboys. He released two albums with this group.

Lennox and Stewart reunited in 1999 and released, Peace. The duo released a total of 14 albums and 34 singles during their careers.
