Europe

Europe

got together as a progressive and later added a keyboard to their sound. The band Europe was one of the most successful Swedish bands of all time and they sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The band first came together in 1979 in Stockholm. and named themselves Force. The members of the band were Joey tempest (vocalist and keyboard), John Norum (guitarist), Peter Olsson (bass), and Tony Reno (drummer). The band had some bad luck in the beginning because they sent some demos to record companies and were told that before they could be published, they needed to cut their hair and also sing in Swedish. After two years Olsson left the band and was replaced by John Leven who left after only two months and joined the band Rising Force. Then Marcel Jacob joined Force. Three months later Jacob and Leven again traded places. Force was entered into a talent contest by Tempestís girlfriend in 1982 and the group won the contest. They had competed against 4,000 bands. The reward for winning was a record deal. Tempest won the award for Best Lead Singer and Norum won for best guitarist. During the contest the group name was changed to Europe. Their debut album was released the following year and sold well in Sweden and also in Japan. Their single, Seven Doors Hotel, became a Top 10 Hit in Japan. One year later, they released their second album, Wings of Tomorrow, and a single from it, Open Your heart, caught the interest of CBS records and the group was offered an international contract in 1985. The group recruited Mic Michaeli to be their keyboard player to play in their live concerts and became an official member of the band shortly after that. Tony Reno was fired because he was slacking off from rehearsals. The band replaced him with Ian Haugland.

The group continued releasing albums and singles. After ten years of recording and performing, the group decided to take a break after their tour in 1992. Since then three of the group, Tempest, Norum, and Marcello have released solo albums and the other members have participated in different projects and bands. Europe was asked to do a concert in Stockholm on New yearís Eve for the Millennium celebrations. That was their first concert with two lead guitarists. This was just a one time event and not a full time reunion for the group. However, over the years there were rumors that the group would get back together and it finally happened. In 2003, the group made plans to release a new album and do a world tour. In 2004 the group went on a tour through Europe. Their album they released sold over 600,000 copies worldwide. The group has just recently started a worldwide tour and released their latest album, Secret Society, in 2006.There next album is said to be released in 2009.
