Duran Duran

is an English pop band which was formed by John Taylor (bass player) and Nick Rhodes (keyboard player). The group was formed in Birmingham, England in 1978. The first singer of the group was Stephen Duffy and several others were to follow after Stephen left the group in 1979. There were also several guitar players and drummers which played with the group at different periods of the groups existence. Other players were Roger Taylor (drum player), Andy Taylor (guitar player), and Simon Le Bon (vocalist). Duran Duran was considered as part of the New Romantic scene. None of the Taylors were related and guitar player Warren Cuccurullo also joined the group from 1989 to 2001. Another change in members was when drummer Sterling Campbell joined the band from 1989 to 1991. The group never split up but did change members on occasion. There was a reunion of the original five members in the early 2000s but Andy Taylor has since left the group again.

In 1980, the band recorded a few demos and also performed in clubs in and around Birmingham and London. In 1980 while they were touring as an opening act for Hazel O’Conner, they got the attention of record companies and it resulted in a bidding war to sign the group their labels. The group decided to sign with EMI because the Beatles had also been with EMI Records. Nick Rhodes later claimed that they were ripped off by EMI.

Duran Duran’s first album, Duran Duran, was released in 1981 on the EMI Records label. Their first single was Planet Earth and it reached number 12 on the Top 20 in the U. K.. The next one called Careless Memories, reached number 37 on the U. K. Chart. Their third single, Girls on Film, was the most favored one of the three and it reached number 5 in the U. K.. There was a video for the song which was released later and it featured topless women mud wrestling.

The band began to receive worldwide recognition in 1982. They released their second album called, Rio, and it produced four Top 20 singles from it. They were, My Own Way, Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, and Rio. The group then went on a tour of Australia, Japan, and the United States. Later they supported Blondie during their final tour in America.

Duran Duran was Princess Diana’s favorite band. and the band was dubbed as The Fab Five, by the British Press. In 2000, Duran Duran reformed the original 5 members and they went on tour. The band released a total of 12 albums during their musical career.
