The Dream Academy

The Dream Academy

The Dream Academy

was a folk rock band and Dream pop band from England in the 1980's. The members of the band were Nick Laird-Clowes (guitar player & singer), Kate St John (multi-instrumentalist), and Gilbert Gabriel (keyboard player). Nick and Gilbert met in the late 1970'’s. Nick was in another band called The Act, at the time. The two decided to try to mix musical instruments that had not been used before and create a different style of music. They wanted to try to mix strings, woodwinds, percussion, and synthesizers. The two first called their band Politics of Pop. It is believed that in the beginning the two had many other players of different instruments before they met Kate St John. Nick met her at a party and liked her talent and her looks, so he asked her to join their group. The trio then decided to call their band The dream Academy and they began recording demos. Their music was rejected by the record labels but they finally landed a contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1985. The trio connected with Adam Peters and David Gilmour, who was a friend of Laird- Clowes and a member of Pink Floyd. They produced and/or played on two of The dream Academy’s albums and co-wrote one of their songs called, Twelve-Eight Angel.

The trio released their first single and it was a very successful hit. Life In A Northern Town was a world wide hit and reached number 7 on the Billboard Pop Music chart. The song was their only major chart hit. The song was initially called, Morning Lasted All Day. They changed the name of it when Paul Simon told Nick that it wasn’t a very good title. The trio went on a world wide promotion tour. They appeared on television shows such as, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, American Bandstand (with Dick Clark), MTV (they had an interview with J. J. Jackson), and The Top of the Pops. The group only toured one time in 1991. The same year Gilbert and Kate decided to leave the group to pursue solo careers. Nick decided to take some time off and visited Africa and South Ease Asia. After that he started working with Gilmour on lyrics for Pink Floyd’s album called, The Division Bell. He then went on to record his own album under the name of Trashmonk. He also worked on movie soundtracks. All three members of The Dream Academy continue working in the music industry but solo, not together. It is rumored that they have reunited to record a new Album called, Angels and Fools. Together the group released 4 albums and 11 singles while they were together as The Dream Academy.
