Culture Club

is a very popular rock group from England. The group obtained their success in the 1980's. The members of the Culture Club were Boy George, Mikey Craig (bass player), Roy hay (guitar and keyboard player), and Jon Moss (drums and percussion). Before Boy George formed the Culture Club, he sang with the group, Bow Wow Wow, and used the stage name Lieutenant Lush. His popularity caused trouble with Bow Wow Wow’s lead singer, Annabella Lwin. After that Boy George decided to form his own band. The group recorded some demos and Virgin records heard them and signed them on in the U. K. and Epic records signed them to their label in the united States.

Culture Club’s first album was released in 1982 and was called, Kissing To Be Clever and from it came the single, White Boy. The song failed to reach the Top 100 on the charts but Boy George was pleased anyway because 5,000 people bought his record and they didn’t even know him. The second single also failed to chart but their third single, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, went to number 1 in the U. K. In 1982, and became a smash international hit and reached number 1 in more than a dozen countries and hit number 2 in the U. S.. The group followed up with the single, Time (Clock of the Heart), and it became another Top 10 hit in the United States and in the U. K.. I’ll Tumble 4 Ya’ became a Top 10 hit in America. The Culture Club was the first band since the Beatles who had ever released three Top 10 hit singles from a debut album. Over 2 million copies were sold in the U. S. and 3 million more worldwide. George became a favorite on the television show, MTV.

The groups second album was Colour By Numbers and it was released in 1983. The first single from it was, Church of the Poison Mind which reached the Top 10 in the U. K. And the U. S.. The second single from the same album was, Karma Chameleon and it was the second number 1 hit in the U. K. And it sold more than one million copies and was also the best selling single of 1983 in that country. The song topped the Hot Top 100 for three weeks at number 1. The song also reached number one in 16 other countries and it became one of the most played songs of the decade. The same album also had three other hit singles from it. They were, Miss Me Blind, It’s A Miracle, and Victims. The songs sold 8 million copies throughout the world. The group was the only group to ever have a diamond album, 10 times platinum, in Canada, because they sold over a million copies in Canada.

The Culture Club released a total of 14 albums and compilations and 22 singles.
