Communardswere a British pop duo who entertained in the 1980's. Jimmy Somerville left his band, Bronski Beat in 1985 to form his own band. He teamed up with the classical trined musician, Richard Coles. Richard was a pianist but but also played other instruments. He has been seen playing clarinet solos on the Bronski Beat hit, It Ainít Necessarily So. Dave Renwick is a bass player who also played with the Bronski Beat. The bandís first hit was in 1985 and it was in the U. K. Top 30 hit list. The song was mostly piano based and was called, You Are My World. In 1986 they had their biggest hit ever called, Donít leave Me This Way. The song was number one for four weeks and became the U. K.ís biggest selling single in 1986. Sarah Jane Morris was featured as a co-vocalist. Later in the same year they had another U.K. Top 10 hit called, So Cold The Night. They released an album in 1987 which was called, Red, and featured a cover version of the Jackson Fiveís hit, Never Can Say Goodbye. The song went to number 4 on the charts.
The group split up in 1988 and Somerville started a solo career. Cole went on to follow his Christian lifestyle after he first tried a bout with journalism for the Times Literary Supplement and the Catholic herald. He is now a vicar at St. Botolphís, in Boston, Massachusetts. Their albums of while they were together consisted of Communards, Live In Italy, Heaven, and Red. Their singles that were released were You Are My World, Disenchanted, Donít Leave Me This Way, So Cold The Night, You Are My World, Tomorrow, Never Can Say Goodbye, For A Friend, and Thereís More To Love. They also had video singles such as Compilation of Music Videos from 1985-1986, and in 2006, Live At Full House Rock Show, and Live TV Concert from Hannover, Germany.
Communards were French political activists in the 19th century and this is where the group got itís name. This British duo will be remembered by some although they were not around for long in the public eye. Sarah Jane Morris sang with the Communards in their song Donít Leave Me This Way. This group is just one of many who had hits which hit the top 10 charts in the U. K. And also in the United States. There may not be many in the states that remember them but there are some in the U. K. who will remember them. The 70's and 80's had many popular songs from other singers in the U. K. And many from the United States and they will be remembered and have all left their mark in the world of music.
