Bruce Springsteen

was born on September 24, 1949, in Long Branch, New jersey. His father was a bus driver and his mother was a legal secretary. He has two sisters, one older and one younger than him. He was inspired to have a music career at the age of 7 after he saw Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show. He bought his first guitar for $18, at the age of 13 and when he was 16, his mother got a loan and bought him a Kent guitar for $60.

In 1965, Bruce went to the house of Tex and Marion Vinyard where young bands were sponsored. They helped Bruce become a lead guitar player for the band, The Castiles. He later became their lead singer too. Bruce performed from 1969 to 1971 throughout New Jersey with Steve Van Zandt (guitar), Danny Federrici (organ player), and Vini Lopez (drum player). Their band was called Child but they later changed the name to Steel Mill.

The group played at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and in California. Bruce also played at small clubs in Asbury Park and along the Jersey Park, at the same time. In 1972, Bruce signed a contract with Columbia Records. He brought some of his friends with him. His band was called the E Street Band. They released his debut album called, Greetings From Asbury Park, N. J., in 1973and it was so successful that it gave him the position of being a favorite in the musical world. He was compared to Bob Dylan because of his folk rock style of music and lyrics.

Bruce’s most popular hit was, Born In the U. S. A., in 1984 The hit sold over 15 million copies in the United States alone. It became one of the best selling albums of all time and it had seven hit singles from it that hit the Top 10 Charts. It was also successful worldwide when he went on a world wide tour.

Bruce won multiple Grammy Awards and also won an Academy Award in 1994 for his song, Streets of San Francisco. This song was used on the soundtrack for the movie, Philadelphia. There was also a music video made of the song. Bruce did a reunion tour in 2000 with his band, the E Street band. The tour ended with a 10 night sold out performance at New York City’s Madison Square gardens. There was an HBO concert made from the recording made of the performance there. There was also a DVD and album released of the same performance.

Bruce Springsteen released a total of 15 albums between 1973 and 2007. He received 15 Grammy Awards, 1 Academy Award, and 1 Emmy Award.
