The group had music in the style of traditional Scottish folk and also martial music. The band consists of Stuart Adamson (vocalist, guitar, and keyboard), Bruce Watson (guitar and vocalist), Tony Butler (bass guitar and vocals), and Mark Brzezicki (drums and percussion). The group also had other drummers throughout their career. Although the group was formed in Scotland, none of the members of the band were born in Scotland. The first single released by the band was, Harvest Home. It was recorded and released in 1982. The single received moderate success and reached number 91 on the U. K. Singles chart. Fields of Fire, was their next single released and it was released in 1983 and it reached the Top 10 in the U. K..They released the album, The Crossing shortly after the single. The album was a big hit in the United States with the track, In A Big Country. The single hit the Top 40 in the U. S. The Crossing sold over one million copies in the U. K. and received gold record status in the United States with over 500,000 copies sold. The group also performed on the Grammy Award show and Saturday Night Live. The band released a single called, Wonderland, in 1984 and also went on tour the same year. The single was considered by some to be one of their best. It was a Top 10 hit and reached number 8 on the U. K. Singles Chart. The song only reached number 86 on the Hot 100 Chart in the United States. It was also the last song to chart in the U. S.. Steeltown was their second album and it went to number one on the U. K.Albums Chart.

From the album came three U. K. Top 40 hits. It peaked at only number 70 on the U. S. Charts. The group toured the U. S., the U. K., and Europe in 1984 and 1985. The group continued to release music and tour to promote their material. The group was dropped by their record company, Phonogram, because they were not making many hits. They continued to sing and move in low circles and finally they received some attention when the major Record Company, Chrysalis Records picked up on their album, The Buffalo Skinners and released it for them. Thei got a lot of praise for the album but there were not many copies sold. After that they became an opening act for other artists such as The Who, and The Rolling Stones.

In 2007 some of the members reunited to go on a tour of the U. K.. It is also rumored that they are going back to the studio to record again.
