Bauhaus

is an English rock band which began in 1978, in Northhampton, England, by Peter Murphy (singer), Daniel Ash (guitar player), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass player). The group got their name from the German Bauhaus art movement. They thought about naming their group Bauhaus 1919 but dropped the 1919 within the year. They are considered to be one of the first gothic rock bands. The band broke up in 1983and the members went on to achieve their careers and success in other projects. They reunited in 1998 to go on tour, then reunited again in 2005 on a permanent basis, and had plans to record another album.

In the beginning of the bandís existence, they entered a studio after being together six weeks. They recorded their first demo at the Beck Studios in Wellingborough. They recorded five songs and the track called, Bela Lugosiís Dead, was released as their first single in 1979 on the Smaller Wonder Records label. The single received some success and stayed on the British charts for two years. It also received a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peelís evening show. The band was asked to record a session for Peelís show and it was broadcast on January, 3,1980.

The group released three more singles before they released their debut album in 1980. Their debut album was called, In the Flat Field. The three singles were, Dark Entries, Terror Couple Kill Colonel, and Telegram Sam. In the Flat Fields reached number 72 on the British charts. Their second album, Mask, was released in 1981. The sound on this album was less intense and less dark. They also began to use keyboards and other instruments. Their third album, The Skyís Gone Out, was released in 1982. They also had their biggest hit in 1982 with the release of, Ziggy Stardust. Their third and final Top of the pops single was Sheís In Parties, which reached number 26 on the charts.

The group decided to break up and did their final farewell show on July 5, 1983. The members parted and went their own ways to try to achieve solo careers. In 1998 the band reunited for the Resurrection Tour. They released a new live album called Gotham, the same year. The band continued to tour and record and released new songs. They toured in May, 2005 with Nine Inch Nails through the summer on the, With Teeth Tour. The band released two new songs called, Adrenaline and Endless Summer of the Damned. Bauhaus has released a total of 7 albums, 14 singles, and 3 compilations to date.
