Animotion

Animotion

is a New Wave, synthpop band which was popular in the 1980's and was most popular for their song, Obsession. The song was written by Michael Des Barres and Holly Knoght. The members of the band were Paul Antonelli (keyboards, Frenchy O’Brien (drums), Jim Blair (drums), Kevin Rankin (drums), Don Kirkpatrick (guitar), Charles Ottavio (bass player), Astrid Plane (vocals), Greg Smith (keyboards), Bill Wadhams (vocals, guitar, and keyboards), Cynthia Rhodes (vocals), and Paul Engemann (vocals). The group was formed in 1983 and they signed a record deal with Polygram Records in 1984. They made three albums and were very successful with their first two albums in South Africa and Germany. This was due to the singles, Obsession, and I Engineer. Both of these singles were in the top 10 in these two countries and managed to get onto some other charts in several European countries. They toured a lot in 1986 and 1987. They appeared with famous groups such as Phil Collins, Genesis, Simply Red, Eurythmics, Inxs, Howard Jones, and Depeche Mode.

The group went through some member changes while they were in the middle of recording their third album. Three of the founding members, Bill Wadhams, Astrid Plane, and Charles Ottavio, all three left. Plane and Ottavio were later married. Cynthia Rhodes replaced Astrid Plane, and Paul Engemann replaced Wadhams. The single, Room To Move, from the third album became a radio hit in 1989 and it was also the second top 10 hit in the United States. Obsession was their first hit in the United States, in 1985. The album did not chart so the group split up after that.

The band reunited on February 8, 2001 after they received a request from KNRK in Portland, Oregon. In the summer of 2005, the founding members, Plane, Ottavio and Wadhams performed as Animotion in the American version of the television show, Hit Me Baby One More Time. They performed the songs Obsession, and a cover of Dirty Vegas’, Days Go By.

The group released a total of five albums and 6 singles. The song Obsession was used as the theme song for the Canadian television show, The NewMusic, and also the television show, Fashion Television. The song was used as the opening theme song for the World Wrestling Federation television program , Saturday Night’s Main Event, from 1985 to 1991. Their song, Room To Move, is in the movie, My Stepmother Is An Alien. Obsession is used twice in the 2005 film Adam & Steve, and it is also used for the theme song for the trailer for the movie, Two Moon Junction. Obsession is also used in the PlayStation 2 videogame, Grand Theft Auto: Vice city.
