Alice Cooper

is an American rock and roll singer and songwriter who has preformed for four decades. He was born on February 4, 1948 and invented his music from heavy metal, horror movies, garage rock, and Vaudeville. This was his way of creating his brand of rock music which came to be known as shock rock. His stage consisted of fake blood, boa constrictors, guillotines, and electric chairs. Alice Cooper was originally just the band name and Vincent Furnier portrayed the lead singer. In 1974 Vincent changed his name to Alice Cooper and started his solo career. The bands first single was released in 1966 and at that time they were known as The Spiders. The Alice Cooper Band had their first hit in 1972 and it was called School’s Out. Billion Dollar Babies was the album that help them reach their commercial peak in 1973. Cooper began his solo career in 1975 with the album Welcome to My Nightmare.

Alice Cooper (Vincent Furnier) was born in Detroit, Michigan. After a bout of childhood illnesses, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Furnier took part in the local annual Letterman’s talent show. He formed a group that called themselves “The Earwigs”. They dressed up like the Beatles and mimed their performance because they could not play any instruments. They also mimed the songs. They won the talent show and this was the push they needed to learn how to play instruments and perform on stage. The group was inspired by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, The Who, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, and The Yardbirds. The group consisted of Furnier Singer-harmonica player, Glen Buxton-lead guitar player, John Tatum- rhythm guitar, Dennis Dunaway-bass guitar, and John Speer-drums. In 1966 the Earwigs graduated from high school and renamed their band The Spiders. They performed around the Phoenix area and then in 1967 they began playing in Los Angeles.

Alice Cooper is known as a witty and very social person when he is not on stage. The Rolling Stone Album Guide referred to him as the world’s most beloved heavy metal entertainer. He was one of the ones to help shape the heavy metal music sound and the look of heavy metal. Besides being a singer and musician, he is also known as a film actor, golfing celebrity, a restaurateur, and a popular radio DJ with his classic rock shows “Nights with Alice Cooper” and “Breakfast With Alice”. Alice Cooper has definitely made his mark in the rock and roll world and will be remembered by many. He had a strange way of performing his shows and decorating his stage but people will always remember it. There was one time in his earlier performances that within 10 minutes he scared the whole audience out of the theater with his performance, dress, and stage props.
