was formed by Donnie Van Zant (vocalist) in 1975. Donnie formed the band in Jacksonville, Florida. The band is sometimes known as 38 Special or Thirty- Eight special. Donnie named the band after the .38 Special pistol. The band had a Southern rock sound which was like the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Donnie’s older brother, Ronnie was a member of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. In the early 1980's the band began to mix blues rock and arena rock into their music. With this new style, they released a string of successful albums and singles. Some of the groups most successful songs are, Caught Up In You (released in 1982), and If I’d Been the One, (released in1983). The songs both reached number 1 on the Billboard Magazine’s Album Rock chart. Two other hits he released were, Hold On Loosely (released in 1981), and Back Where You Belong (1984).

The members of the band are Donnie Van Zant (lead singer and guitar player), Don Barnes (co-lead singer and guitar player), Danny Chauncey (guitar player), Larry Junstrom (bass player), Bobby capps, (keyboard player), and Gary Moffatt (drummer). The group has released 18 albums and 14 singles up to and including the millennium. They released albums from 1977 until 2000. Their singles were released from 1980 until 1986. Every single reached a mark on the charts and all but two of them reached the top 40. Nine of their albums were rated in the top 200.

In 2007 the band was a special guest on the Lynyrd Skynyrd and hank Williams Jr’s Rowdy Frynds tour. .38 Special was the opening act for the tour. The group’s hit song, Hang On Loosely, has been featured in the 2007 game, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks in the 80's, and is a playable track. .38 Special has also been given full credit for supplying all of the music for the big hit independent movie, Super Troopers.
