80s Female Music Groups









There were not many 80s all female music groups but there were some that were very successful and are remembered by their many fans. There were many solo female artists but not many had all girl bands. The very first all girl rock band of the 80's was the group called the Go Go’s. They had some very popular songs. Other well remembered all girl bands were The bangles, Helen, and Catholic Girls. These are just a few of the well known female groups.

There were other female groups in the 80's but some of them had some male guitar player or other instrument players who were male. Some of these were The Pointer Sisters, and The Weather Girls. Some of the most popular solo females were, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Sheila E, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Shannon, Irene Cara, Diana Ross, Marcia Griffiths, and the list goes on and on. Females have been a big part of the success of the 80's rock music era as well as the 50's, 60's, 70's, 90's. and 2000's. There were female rappers as well as males. It seemed that the females could explore any style of music just as well as the males did and they proved it through their success.

Rock music changed in the 80's and it was divided into many different styles. There was a variety of styles to choose from. There was hard rock, soft rock, college rock, heavy metal, disco, post punk, hair metal, gangsta rap, New Wave of British heavy metal, heartland rock, and thrash metal. There were also new dance styles to go along with the music. There was disco, break dancing, poppin’, wavin’, lockin’, tickin’, new kids move, funky twist, moonwalk, cabbage patch, Pac man, Robo Cop, Roger rabbit, and Running man, plus many others.

Some of the popular songs from some of the female singers of the 80's were, Into the Groove (Madonna), Like A Virgin (Madonna), Flashdance...What A Feeling (Irene Cara), It’s Raining men (The Weather Girls), Holiday (Madonna), I’m So Excited (The Pointer Sisters), I’m Coming Out (Diana Ross), Girls Just Wanna’ Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper), Let the Music Play (Shannon), Jump For My Love (The Pointer Sisters), Fame (Irene Cara), I Wanna’ Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me (Whitney Houston), She Works Hard For the Money (Donna Summer), Papa Don’t Preach (Madonna), The glamorous Life (Sheila E), and many more. These particular songs and the artists were among the top 50 songs of the 1980's. This shows that almost one third of the top rated songs were sung by females and female groups.
